I got the game on Wednesday and have played the hell out of it. I am averaging 3 hours of sleep each night and thank god I have a four day weekend. The only problem I see people having with the game is gems. If you are lucky enough to find a gem pond, they look like most other shrines, drop all the gems you have except the one you want upgraded. The more upgraded it is the more powerful  it will be when you put  it in a socketed item. If you have multiple gems on you when you visit t he gem pond a random one is chosen to be upgraded. The order of the upgrade is:

Chipped becomes Flawed
Flawed becomes Normal
Normal becomes Perfect

Though I have not done it myself, I hear that the effects on gems in socketed items is accumulative.

So far, it  doesn't do a thing. Blizzard's official stance on the it. "We aren't going to tell you"

On your site, you have the following info on gems:
Chipped becomes Flawed
Flawed becomes Normal
Normal becomes Perfect

There is one between Normal and Perfect, it is called Flawless.
Shouldn´t the oder be:
Normal becomes Flawless
Flawless becomes Perfect?
That is the order that will appear if you use the Horadric cube to upgrade the gems. three chipped becomes one flawed and so on

There are some thoughts of mine i'd like to share, too:

You said item hunting in diablo2 would be great, yes it is, after backing up my savegame files folder, i go to Charsi, the blacksmith in Act 1, giving her every kind of items to imbue. The result was marvellous, for there can be more than one rare item for a normal item. For example, i backed up my files and gave her a flamberge. She made a "Demon Hew", which caused monsters to flee with %9 mana drain and a very high bonus to attack rating and maybe something more. I didn't like it and restored my files to try it again, this time she made a "Soul Hew" out of the very same flamberge. Needless to say, it will take GREAT time to discover all rare items with that trick, but it IS the most quick and formal way to do it, i think.
